Whats Happening Wednesday - Meet Makeup Guru Tara Cowles

Last week the new online magazine called Feverish News, did a feature interview on our director and founder Tara Cowles, and we have it here!
Michelle Magnan McIvor is a Canadian journalist and she talks about everything from Beauty, Food, Style and Wellness. We invite you to take a look at her magazine here!

Now lets take a look into the life of Calgary’s own Makeup Guru,
Tara Cowels.

The director and founder of Artists Within is building a makeup empire, one step at a time

Tara Cowles knows makeup.

After studying in London, England, she spent 15 years as a makeup artist; her work included photo shoots and runways shows in London, Paris and throughout Spain. When she moved back to Calgary in 2002, the city where she’d attended elementary school before moving to Europe with her family, she had one big question: “Now what do I do?”

Tara spotted a need for high-caliber makeup artistry so she did what any entrepreneurial go-getter would do — she started her own company. In 2003, Tara launched Artists Within Makeup Academy, the only accredited makeup school in Alberta. Since then, she estimates she’s trained thousands.

Not content to stop there, Tara began developing her own makeup line about 10 years ago, called AW03 maquillage. Her affordable products and kits are now available in 15 locations — Phi Medical Aesthetics and Butter Beauty Parlour in Calgary, among other spots — and they’re available for worldwide shipping from her online shop.

Read on for Tara’s thoughts on everything from how she created success and the advice she’d share with future go-getters to how she views the always-tricky subject of work-life balance. And don’t miss the Hot List at the end, featuring the five things Tara can’t live without.

Tara’s thoughts on everything from how she created success and the advice she’d share with future go-getters to how she views the always-tricky subject of work-life balance. And don’t miss the Hot List at the end, featuring the five things Tara can’t live without.

What gave you the courage to start your own venture?

“I know, I’m not sure where that came from! (laughs) I had a young son and I wanted to spend more time with him. I actually thought starting a business would give me more time, which wasn’t the case. I just felt that Calgary really needed something like this and I had the experience to make it happen. I put everything I had on the line and thought, worst case scenario, I can move in with my dad. I started small – one program to start with – so what we have now was built up over the years. It wasn’t as intense as it seems.”

Is there one thing you attribute your success to?

“Not being afraid to try something new. I go into things head-on and know it won’t be the end of the world, if it doesn’t work out. And the success has been a slow build, which has given me time. I suppose being a perfectionist is one of my issues – or not. Having a great team of people is key, and learning how to delegate. I used to have to do everything my way, but letting other people’s feedback come in and not doing it all on my own anymore is a huge factor.”

How do you overcome failure?

“Still to this day, I have a feeling of never being sure the success is going to last. For me, that’s kind of where I live, which maybe keeps my drive going and keeps me motivated. I never take it for granted that I’m successful. There have been projects I’ve tried – whether they were too much work or weren’t the right fit – that I’ve let go of, so I’ve learned I have the three key components of the business (the school, the online school and the makeup line) and it’s easier now to delegate this or that to other people. It keeps me more focused. Before I wanted to try everything.”

What is your advice for someone has an idea for her own venture?

“Stay focused on what you believe. One of the hardest things is other people’s negativity and I’ve had a lot of that over the years. You have to stay true to yourself. I got where I am because I worked really, really hard and I still do. I stay up till 1:30 in the morning finishing work up. Stay focused and believe in yourself, and understand that it takes a lot of work. Success doesn’t come easily, ever. At least, I don’t think it does!”

As a mother, how do you strike a balance between work and family life?

“I am still trying to figure that out, honestly. As a mom, you always want to be there more. But I also know I need this side of me, too. I wouldn’t be as good a mom if I was staying at home. That’s not who I am.

My husband is supportive and he’ll stay at home and help or be home early, or whatever it is. I have a nanny, as well, who my three-year-old son loves. I try to take some mornings off, too, so we can do fun things.

Is it ever easy to juggle a family and work? No. I don’t think there are any easy answers. I don’t feel guilty for working and doing what I love, and it provides a good life for my family, which is important, too.”

What are your goals now?

“To work less and earn more! I really want to focus growing the online side of the business. It seems that’s where everything is going. I actually find I’m being a makeup artist more now. There were a few years where I really didn’t do makeup because I was so busy running the business, so it’s nice to get back to what I’m good at and what I love.”

What do you love about doing makeup?

“I love being creative. I love making a difference in somebody’s face and seeing somebody excited. I love when I do makeup for somebody and they’re blown away by how good they look and feel.”

What is your top makeup tip?

“I think the most important thing is getting your base right. You can add beautiful eyes or lips, but if your skin doesn’t look flawless, then nothing looks as good as it should. If there’s one thing that women should focus on every day, it’s doing primer, foundation, concealer and some highlighter/contour. It makes a huge difference.”

The Glitz . The Glam . The Oscars

Sunday night the 91st Academy Awards were held at the Dolby theatre in Hollywood.
The stars definitely were out to shine!
We have put together the top trends and our favourite looks from the night.

Lady Gaga was the epitome of grace and sophistication. Gaga walked the red carpet in an Alexander McQueen gown with black evening gloves. The true highlight of her outfit was the priceless 128.54 Carat "Tiffany Diamond" necklace. Did you know this necklace was last worn by Audrey Hepburn in 1962 for her publicity posters for Breakfast at Tiffanys?
Does Gaga's hair look familiar? It should, it was a modern take on Audrey Hepburn's updo in the film. To pull the look together Gaga's makeup artist Sarah Tanno focused on making the actress look soft and fresh. Tanno used a silver liner, taupe shadow and soft contour as the main focus adding bold brows to contrast her platinum locks. A rose gloss was added, finishing off this drop dead creation!

Gemma Chan graced the red carpet wearing Valentino Haute Couture. Such a beautiful shade of pink on Gemma! What we really loved was the pockets! It's a good thing too as the actress was said to have stashed some cookies for later!
Gemma's hair was pulled into a low, relaxed chignon to show off her beautiful emerald and diamond earrings, a fun twist. Gemma chose a monochromatic pink makeup look with soft pink eyeshadow, rosey blush, finished off with a nude-pink lipstick. The focal point of the makeup look was the black winged liquid liner which gave contrast to the pretty pinks.

Jennifer Lopez, the glow queen glistened as she took to the red carpet. JLo looked like a modern day version of the Oscar statue in her stunning custom creation from Tom Ford. The mirrored gown being the focal point called for a simple clutch and jewelry which she pulled off to perfection.
Ms. Lopez pulled the look together with a simple blowout parted on the side. Her makeup had her signature sheeny glow going on, using a bronze copper shadow and cheeks with the perfect nude lip. The touch of drama came from her smokey eye, black liner and lashings of mascara, a look the she wears so well. Breathtaking was the final conclusion!

Fashion Friday

R.I.P Karl Lagerfeld

It is with deep sadness that the House of CHANEL announced the passing of Karl Lagerfeld, the Creative Director for the CHANEL Fashion House, February 19, 2019 at the age of 85.

Karl Otto Lagerfeld was born September 10th, 1933 in Hamburg Germany.

The designer, the creative director for CHANEL and Fendi, was one of the industry's most iconic figures. He was able to showcase one last collection at Couture Fashion Week in Paris but
unfortunately was not in attendance for the show.

The big question id with Lagerfeld's death, who will take over the fashion throne?
CHANEL has not indicated when or even if it will replace him. For now, his right have Virginie Viard of 30 years, director of CHANEL's Fashion Creation Studio, has been entrusted by Alain Wertheimer with the creative work for the collections, allowing the legacy of
Gabrielle Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld to live on.

The truth is Karl is simply irreplaceable.

Thank you for the memories, the inspiration and iconic style.
You will always be a Fashion Icon and a Fashion God!

Do you have dry hair?

Tuesday Tutorial - Dry Hair Edition

At his point we are all suffering the from the winter vortex, but that
doesn't mean our hair has to!
During winter our hair normally gets dry but when the temperature drops to -40, we have a whole new problem! We have put together the best tips to keep your hair hydrated and healthy this winter.

Go from frizzy hair to beautiful locks with the
Hydrate collection by Kevin Murphy.

Step 1: Lather, rinse, repeat! Apply the Hydrate-Me.Wash to wet hair, massage through to the scalp and make sure to thoroughly rinse. Ideal for hair that is dry, or exposed to harsh dry climates. It is packed with antioxidants such as Vitamins A and C as well as Shea Butter.

Step 2: Apply, absorb, rinse.Apply the Hydrate-Me.Masque to freshly washed hair and massage into your hair and scalp for 5 to 10 minutes allowing the benefits to absorb, before rinsing clean. The unique formula features vitamin-charged, micro-capsules the explode upon contact to deliver hydration and moisture, leaving the hair deeply conditioned from root to tip!

Step 3: Next apply the Hydrate-Me.Rinse and allow to absorb into your hair for 1 to 2 minutes, followed by a refreshing rinse. The Hydrate-Me.Rinse provides an essential moisture boost to nourish dry, parched locks and transforms the look and feel of split ends. Tour hair will be left with a nourished and healthy-looking glow.

Step 4: Once you have dried and styled your hair as desired spray the Shimmer.Shine Spray. No rinsing required. This will add a little shimmer to your shine. Shimmer.Shine has a specially selected blend of ingredients from the Australian Rainforest. They are chosen for their ability to flourish in harsh climates by adding elasticity and able to revive hair. Packed with Vitamins C and E, Baobab, Immortelle and Bamboo its a spritz of goodness for the hair.

Tuesday Tutorial

It might still be winter but that doesn't mean you cant be bold!
Purple lipstick can be intimidating. It's just so....purple, a colour that demands attention.
You can make it as bold or as subtle as you want.
We have put together a step by step tutorial for a bold lip with a flawless nude face.

Mineral Liquid Powder Foundation . Pressed Illuminator Powder . Liquid Eyeshadow in Eclipse . Black Volumizing Mascara . Liquid to Matte Lipstick in Cosmo

Step 1. Apply the liquid mineral powder foundation over the face and neck. Apply to large areas such as the cheeks and forehead first which will prevent a large build up of product in areas that are not easy to work around, such as the nose. Work across the the face and down onto the neck until the product is blended with no streaky areas. We recommend the foundation brush for this.

Step 2. Using the pressed illuminator powder, apply to the cheekbones, brow bones as well as the bridge of the nose using the large powder brush.

Step 3. Apply a wash of colour from your eyelid up to your brow bone using the liquid eyeshadow in eclipse.

Step 4. Using a wiggle motion when applying the volumizing mascara to create both volume and length in your lashes.

Step 5. Finally apply the liquid to matte lipstick in Cosmo on the bottom lip first. Put your lips together and fill any spots that were missed.

Voila, beautiful soft sheeny skin with a pop of colour to take you from dusk till dawn!

Makeup Monday Couture Edition

As always there are some jaw dropping makeup looks on the runways during Couture Fashion Week!
We have put together a collection of these stunning makeup looks, that are our favourites that you must see from the haute couture shows!

We can not stop staring at these lashes! Legendary makeup artist Pat McGrath adorned models lashes with delicate feather extensions at the Valentino show. Glam and oh so gorgeous!

Elegant, expensive glamour was on the menu for the Givenchy runway. The models dawned perfectly polished skin which was the focus of the look, and finished with beautiful lashes.

The hottest spring 2019 makeup trend will be the bright or neon washes of colour. This look made an appearance at Alexis Mabille, where models wore stunning eye catching colours.

Another trend you will see in SS19 will be the bold black liner! This exaggerated eyeliner stole the show at Giambattista Valli, where the models wore jet black winged liner and little else in the way of makeup.

Fashion Friday - The Best of Couture Fashion Week

From breathtaking gowns to the striking out of this world creations.
When it comes to couture there are just a few of our top favourite looks that graced this years runway.

A show so beautiful that it moved Celine Dion and many others in attendance to tears. Not many runway collections can claim that. Pierpaolo Piccioli took 'Florals for Spring' to a new level for Valentino Couture, and is showing no signs of slowing down! This collection was all about magical, fairytale fashion, tiered gowns and intricate embroidery.

After a 16 year hiatus from the Couture world, Olivier Rousteing brought Balmain back with a vengeance, using the sexy aesthetic Balmain has become known for, but amping it up more to an aspirational look with Couture clients in mind. Feathers, tule, pearls, beading and oversized taffeta come strutting down the runway in an impressive fashion.

The latest Haute Couture collection Armani was inspired by the glamours Jazz Age, resulting in flapper hats, fringing galore and plenty of Art Deco touches. Vibrant bolts of blues, reds and purples appeared throughout the runway. This definitely put a fun spin on the always so elegant Armani.

Viktor & Rold's playful SS19 Couture collection was inspired by the plentiful Instagram captions and slogans. All phrases were sewn onto the prettiest of dresses. A comment on the internet yes, but such a clever move to get the collection seen everywhere!

Victoria Beckham Fashion Icon 2018

If you grew up in the 1990's Victoria Beckham nee Adams was a household name. While we were singing in the bathroom with our hairbrush microphone, this Posh Spice was transforming herself from Spice Girl to Fashion Style Icon.
For Victoria the rise to fashion's highest mention has been a long journey with many memorable outfits and style reinventions. From the days of Spice Girls where monochrome palettes and sleek hair ruled, she had even then made a statement. From the film "Spice World" the most famous line from that movie was Mel C telling Victoria to wear  "the little Gucci dress, the little Gucci dress, Or- the little Gucci dress" We knew at that moment Victoria was bound for fashion greatness.

Beckham made a guest appearance on the catwalk for Maria Grachvogle on February 17, 2000, making her debut as a model at London Fashion Week. She also acted as a British ambassador for Dolce and Gabbana and was briefly the face of Rocawear. She first designed a limited-edition fashion line for Rock & Republic called VB Rocks in 2004, consisting mainly of jeans. In 2006, Victoria walked the runway for Roberto Cavalli at Milan Fashion Week, and was for a period exclusively dressed by him for red-carpet and social events.

Beckham has graced countless fashion magazine covers during her career. Her first Vogue appearance was February 2004 for her solo Vogue cover for the Spanish edition. This was followed by Vogue India, Vogue Paris as well as the British, German, Russian, Australian, Turkish, Taiwanese & Chinese editions. She has also graced various international Harper's Bazaar and Elle.
Here is her very first solo Vogue cover and her most recent October 2018 edition.

Beckham's label was launched in September 2008 in a low-key presentation. By 2011, it had grown into a fixture of New York Fashion Week! Known initially for its dresses, the line expanded into separates and luxury handbags. Alongside the main fashion line, the Victoria Beckham brand still includes separate denim, eyeware and fragrance lines. This line would not be complete without a line of eyeware, in 2006 Harper's Bazaar Victoria admitted to a personal love of sunglasses, saying "I'm quite obsessed with sunglasses. I collect vintage Guccis and Carreras. They can make virtually any outfit look cool." Nowadays, when Beckham steps out you hardly ever see her without a pair of sunny's.

Victoria Beckham had made the transition from novelty to respected designer, citing her editorship of French Vogue and her participation in a panel discussion with the dean of Parsons design school in New York. In 2018 her collection was presented at London Fashion Week instead of at New York Fashion Week as normal.

Sunday November 11, 2018 Victoria was honored with the Fashion Icon Award at the People Choice Awards and accepted her prize in true Beckham fashion, wearing a chic all-white blazer - and - trouser ensemble.
During her acceptance speech, she thanked the firefighters who were working tirelessly to help battle the devastating California wildfires, and gave a call to all others like her who dream big - referencing a lyric from the Spice Girls "Wannabe". "I always told myself, 'Dream big and then dream even bigger.' I wanted to show that if i can do it, anyone can do it. And what you can achieve really can be limitless," said the singer and fashion designer, 44, adding with a signature Girl-Power peace-sign hand gesture, "I can't help it - if you really, really want it, okay?"

Congratulations Victoria Beckham on being the 2018 Fashion Icon!
